For most of King Cake season, you can usually order a King Cake and have it shipped the same week.
The reason we recommend ordering early is not because every date sells out weeks in advance. It is because the final week before Mardi Gras gets extremely busy, and certain delivery dates, flavors, and shipping options can fill up well before Fat Tuesday.
During Most of King Cake Season
For regular seasonal dates, you generally do not need to order weeks ahead.
In many cases, you can place an order during the same week you want your King Cake delivered.
Ordering earlier still gives you some advantages:
- More flavor choices
- More available delivery dates
- Less risk of sellouts
- More flexibility if weather or shipping delays occur
- A better chance of finding seasonal promotions
If you are simply ordering a King Cake for yourself and your timing is flexible, same-week ordering is often fine.
If You Need the Cake for a Specific Party or Event, Order Early
If your King Cake has to be there for a specific party, office event, school celebration, or family gathering, it is better to order early.
Do not schedule the cake to arrive on the exact day you need it if you can avoid it.
Shipping delays can happen because of weather, carrier problems, or unusually heavy Mardi Gras volume.
Having the cake arrive a day or two early gives you a cushion and removes a lot of unnecessary stress.

The Week Before Mardi Gras Is Different
The final week before Mardi Gras is the busiest part of the season.
Many bakeries reach their production or shipping limits before the week even begins.
Some bakeries also simplify their menus during the final rush. A bakery that normally offers many filled flavors may limit orders to:
- Traditional King Cake only
- Traditional and cream cheese only
- A smaller selection of the easiest cakes to produce in large quantities
So even when a bakery is still accepting orders, the flavor you want may no longer be available.
Long Mardi Gras Seasons
When Mardi Gras falls in late February or March, demand is spread across a longer season.
If you want a cake during the final Mardi Gras rush, ordering two to three weeks ahead is usually a good idea.
Short Mardi Gras Seasons
When Mardi Gras falls in early or mid-February, the entire season is compressed into fewer weeks.
For the busiest dates, ordering three to five weeks ahead can be safer.
Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras Day Can Sell Out Well in Advance
If you specifically want your King Cake delivered on Lundi Gras or Mardi Gras Day, order as early as possible.
Those are among the most requested delivery dates of the season, and many bakeries sell out well in advance.
There are also usually fewer discounts for those dates because bakeries already expect to reach capacity.
Friday and Saturday Before Mardi Gras
Friday before Mardi Gras is also a very busy delivery day.
Saturday may sometimes have more availability, but Saturday delivery is generally more expensive with many shipping services.
If your first-choice date is already full, checking the Friday or Saturday before Mardi Gras can sometimes give you another option.
Ordering Early Does Not Mean Your Cake Ships Early
This is something many first-time buyers do not realize.
Most online King Cake bakeries allow you to choose a future delivery date from a calendar when you place your order.
For example, you might place your order in January and choose a delivery date near Mardi Gras several weeks later.
Ordering early does not normally mean the bakery immediately bakes your cake and lets it sit around until your chosen delivery date.
The order is scheduled for production based on the delivery date you selected.
Your cake is baked and shipped at the appropriate time so that it arrives when requested.
“2-Day Shipping” Does Not Mean You Will Receive Your Cake Two Days After Ordering
This is another common misunderstanding.
Shipping terms such as Next Day or 2-Day describe the carrier service used after the bakery ships your cake.
They do not necessarily describe how soon after placing your order the cake will arrive.
For example, if you place an order today and choose a delivery date three weeks from now, the bakery will schedule the cake to be made and shipped closer to that date.
The 2-Day designation simply means the carrier is expected to transport the package in approximately two shipping days once it leaves the bakery.
Fast shipping is often used with King Cakes because freshness matters.
It is not the same thing as immediate fulfillment.
You Can Also Order Early and Freeze Your King Cake
If you want to avoid the final Mardi Gras rush entirely, another option is to order your King Cake early and freeze it until you need it.
A properly packaged King Cake freezes very well.
This can be helpful if:
- You already know the date of your party
- You want a specific flavor
- You want to avoid sold-out delivery dates
- You find an earlier-season promotion
- You do not want to worry about last-minute shipping
During a longer Mardi Gras season, there is often a slower period in the middle of the season when availability may be better and some bakeries may offer promotions.
So How Early Should You Really Order?
For an ordinary day during King Cake season:
Same-week ordering is often possible.
For an important party or event:
Order early enough to have the cake arrive at least a day or two before you need it.
For the final week before Mardi Gras:
Order as early as you reasonably can.
For Lundi Gras or Mardi Gras Day:
Do not wait. Those dates can sell out weeks in advance.
And remember: ordering early does not mean getting an old cake.
Most bakeries allow you to reserve a future delivery date, then bake and ship the cake at the proper time for that arrival date.
Shipping Schedules Can Change During the Year
Some King Cake bakeries, including KingKingCakes, offer shipping year-round, but the number of available shipping days may change depending on the season.
During Mardi Gras season, bakeries may ship more frequently because order volume is much higher.
Outside of Mardi Gras season, shipping may be limited to certain days of the week.
So if you check a bakery’s delivery calendar in August, you may see fewer available dates than you would see during January or February.
That does not necessarily mean the bakery has stopped shipping. It may simply be operating on a reduced off-season shipping schedule.
