Storage & Freezing Tips

Planning to Enjoy Your King Cake Later?

If you won’t be serving your King Cake within the next few days, the best place for it is the freezer.

Simply place the entire inner King Cake box in your freezer. There’s no need to keep the outer shipping box. When you’re ready to enjoy it, remove the cake from the freezer the morning you plan to decorate it. If you’ll be serving it early in the day, take it out the night before instead.

Once the cake has thawed, simply follow the decorating instructions included with your King Cake.

Want to Enjoy Some Now and Save the Rest?

No problem! King Cake freezes very well.

Decorate your King Cake according to the instructions, then cut it into individual slices.

Place the slices on a baking sheet or pan in a single layer and freeze them uncovered overnight. This allows the icing to harden so it won’t stick to the wrapping.

If you don’t have enough freezer space for a baking sheet, simply let the icing set for a few hours before cutting the cake into slices. Then wrap each slice carefully so the icing doesn’t stick to the wrapping.

The next day, wrap each slice tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in a freezer bag or wrap it again with aluminum foil for extra protection.

How to Thaw Frozen Slices

For the best results, remove the slices from the freezer the night before you plan to enjoy them. If you forget, simply let them thaw at room temperature for about 4 hours.

Once thawed, remove all wrapping.

If you like your King Cake warm, microwave a slice for about 10 seconds.

Many people—including us—also enjoy it at room temperature, so it’s really a matter of personal preference.

Enjoy whichever way you like it best!

King King Cakes Tip

We actually prefer freezing individual slices instead of the whole decorated cake. That way, whenever you’re craving a piece of New Orleans, you can thaw just one slice instead of the entire cake.
